Airline staff located a knife on the plane and gave it to an onboard US air marshal, while a 75-year-old was later charged
A Central Coast man has been charged with allegedly bringing a box cutter knife onto an international flight earlier this year.
The Australian federal police said a knife was located by airline staff on a plane leaving Sydney airport on 23 July which was bound for Los Angeles. The knife was seized by airline staff and provided to the US air marshal on board.
AFP officers interviewed airline staff, passengers, and the US air marshal when the aircraft returned to the airport terminal. The plane was searched and passengers went through another security screening.
A 75-year-old man from New South Wales’ Central Coast was interviewed by officers and issued a court attendance notice.
He was expected to face Downing Centre local court on Tuesday, charged with allegedly possessing a prohibited item onboard an aircraft.
The maximum penalty is two years imprisonment.
Sydney Airport was contacted for comment about the alleged incident but deferred to the Australian Federal Police.
